Good news and next CopyNight

First, some good news on the legislative front - Boucher will be the new chair of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet

Also?  Next CopyNight will be January 28th, location TBA soon.

CopyNight on Nov 12th?

I can’t make a CopyNight happen on Wednesday.  But here’s the thing, I also don’t want to let it go until February, which it probably would if we stick with the fourth Wednesday.

Who could make it to a November 12th CopyNight?

Next CopyNight Sept 23rd

As it seemed that most people were going to be out of town this week, we’ll hold our next CopyNight in September.

I wanted to let you all know that I’ve gotten some positive initial response from McMenamins about screening “Freedom of Expression” at one of their theater pubs.  Also, don’t forget we have the O’Reilly sponsorship.  Do let me know if there are any books you’d like me to order between now and September.

O’Reilly sponsorship!

Great news!  Our request to O’Reilly to have them sponsor our group was granted.  What does this mean for us?

  • all CopyNighters will receive a 35% discount on O’Reilly, No Starch, PC Publishing, Pragmatic Bookshelf, Rocky Nook, SitePoint, or YoungJin products purchased directly from O’Reilly.
  • O’Reilly will send us free review copies of their titles.  Books we get from them for review should be reviewed for this blog and also Amazon, Slashdot, oreilly.com, and/or any other appropriate review venue.  Basically the deal here is free books in exchange for a review.  Let me know if there’s an O’Reilly title you’d like me to get for your review.
  • They are also willing to donate books, etc that we could use a door prizes or the like at any events we hold (which is great because i’m still really revved up to start doing some events).
  • Finally, they can sometimes arrange for their authors to speak at events.

I’ll bring more details about the program to our next meeting!  I’m excited!

Flyer updated

Hey all,

I revised the copynight flyer, please feel free to print it out and post it wherever you think people might be interested in seeing it.

I’ve also linked to it from the “about” page.

Copynight on Wednesday

This Wednesday (the 23rd) we’ll have CopyNight at the Green Dragon in SE Portland (928 SE 9th Ave
(503) 517-0606 – near the Q Hut).  There we can enjoy fine beer, lovely spirits from the Integrity distillery, good food, and some great copyright conversation.  I have some info I brought back from the UMUC Symposium.

We will kick off the evening with a discussion of orphan works and the status of orphan works legislation.

I really looking forward to seeing everyone after missing the last couple of months.  We will meet on the restaurant side of the Green Dragon, I’m pretty sure I’ve got them convinced to save the big table for us.

Again, I love to know if you’re coming ahead of time so I can have a rough idea of how many tables to save but it’s not *at all* required!

May CopyNight cancelled

We will not be meeting this month, sorry!

“unauthorized distribution”

Thanks to Sebastian for pointing out this post on the Wired blog about UMG Recording Group’s argument in court filings last week that throwing out promo CDs constitutes an “unauthorized distribution” of those CDs.  Basically the record label is suing someone for selling promotional CDs labeled “not for resale” without “requisite proof of first sale”.  I’ve actually wondered about that whole labeled “not for resale” thing…perhaps we can talk about that…maybe one of the lawyers wants to give their take.

Good one, Sebastian, thanks for sending it along!

CopyNight Tomorrow! LOCATION CHANGE!!!

I really thought we were lucky with the Maiden as a spot to meet, sadly our luck did not hold out.  The Maiden is under new management and while the new menu looks really nice, I think its gone a bit upscale for our group.  Somehow “duck confit” and “copynight” don’t really go hand-in-hand, in my mind.

So. I think we should try something a little different this month and meet at the Green Dragon on SE 9th.  There is a “bistro” side with table service and, well, tables but there is also a bar side that has some sit down tables and some high top tables with and without chairs.  I’m wondering if it would be kind of cool to congregate around some of those high tables — it’s a sort of set up so that it’s easy to move around and socialize.  So, I propose we meet at the Green Dragon on the bar side at 7:30.  They do have food – really pretty good food – and you can order at the bar.  They have an awesome selection of obscure beers and I think they have wine, they definitely have cocktails.

The place is basically a garage so don’t expect a ton of ambiance but it could be fun!!!

If it doesn’t work, or people dislike it, we can pick a new place.  Basically, I just discovered how much the Maiden had changed today and I don’t have time to call all over and I really like the beer at the Green Dragon.

It’s on 9th, off of Belmont near the Q Hut.

Candy volunteered to start us off with a good conversation about IP rights vs. human rights!  Should be a really good one!
